套筒式氣彈簧有一根直徑較大的活塞桿，活塞上開有一個節流小孔，使活塞左右兩腔相通，其工作原理是：當套筒內腔充入有壓力的氣體后，因活塞上有一節流小孔，使活塞左右兩腔壓力相等，可見該套筒內的活塞是按差動原理工作的。由于有一根直徑較大的活塞桿，使活塞右腔的受力大干左腔的受力，因而在活塞上作用著一個復位力，活塞在此復位力的推動下，將移動到左端位置。當用手力加大載荷時，可克服活塞的復位力，使活塞緩慢移動到右端位置，這時可用機械機構將負載鎖緊，當打開鎖緊機構后，復位力則克服負載，使負載在括塞復位力的推動下，自動復位回到開始位置。
套筒式氣彈簧具有以下一些特點：
(1)對于同一內徑的套筒式氣彈簧，當內腔充氣壓力增大時，復位力隨著壓力的增大而增大，這使得同一種套筒式氣彈簧，可以適應多種負載的要求。
(2)活塞上開有節流小孔，當空氣流過節流小孔時，由于氣阻而吸收一部分振動能量，從而起到了減振阻尼作用。
(3)與鋼彈簧相比，在承受激烈振動載荷時，套筒式氣彈簧的壽命較長，在同樣行程條件下，套筒式氣彈簧的長度較短。
(4)結構簡單、新穎，零件較少，制造方便，成本下降。
